Bhairavgad Fort is located near Malshej Ghat in the Sahyadri mountain ranges of Maharashtra, India.

The fort was built during the Shilahara dynasty and was strategically important due to its location.

Medieval Use

The Bahmani Sultanate took over  the fort and, after its collapse, the  fort came under the control of the  Nizam Shahis of Ahmednagar.

Maratha Empire

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj recaptured Bhairavgad Fort during his expansion of the Maratha Empire.

British Control

The fort fell to the British after the defeat of the Marathas in the Anglo-Maratha Wars in the early 19th century.

Name and Mythology

The fort is named after Bhairav, a fierce form of Lord Shiva, and has a temple dedicated to him at the top.
