ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR UGC NET

Age Limit for Assistant Professor in UGC NET is as follows:
According to the eligibility criteria for UGC NET, candidates applying for Assistant Professor positions are not subject to an upper age limit. Once a candidate has qualified the UGC NET exam for Assistant Professor positions, they are eligible to apply for the job at any time throughout their life.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
- The eligibility criteria for appearing in the UGC NET exam is determined by the National Testing Agency, which includes minimum educational qualifications and other requirements. To be eligible to take the exam, a candidate must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university or institution. The detailed educational qualifications required for UGC NET eligibility can be checked below.
- Candidates belonging to the General/Unreserved/General-EWS category are required to obtain a minimum of 55% marks in their post-graduation (master’s degree) in the relevant subject or an equivalent examination from a UGC-recognized institution or university.
- Non-creamy layer candidates, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disability (PwD) are eligible to apply for this exam if they have obtained at least 50% marks in their post-graduation in the relevant subject or any equivalent exam from a UGC-recognized institution or university.
- Candidates in their final year of post-graduation studies or who have appeared for the exam of their qualifying post-graduation course and are awaiting their results are eligible to apply for this exam. However, only provisional allotment will be granted to such candidates. They will be eligible for the Assistant Professor or JRF positions only after completing their post-graduation course with the required UGC NET Eligibility 2024. The course must be completed within 2 years from the date of the result.
- Candidates who identify as transgender will be eligible for the same fee, age, and qualifying criteria relaxation as those in the SC/ST/PwD categories, in accordance with UGC NET eligibility, for both Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor positions. The subject-specific cut-offs for this category will be the lowest among the SC/ST/PwD/OBC-NCL categories in their respective subjects.
- Candidates belonging to the General category who obtained their Ph.D. degree and completed their master’s degree before September 19th, 1991, are entitled to a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks. This means that they only need to score a minimum of 50% instead of the usual 55% to meet the eligibility criteria. It doesn’t matter when the result declaration took place.
- Candidates who hold a post-graduate diploma or certificate from an Indian or foreign university or institute should ensure that their diploma, degree, or certificate is equivalent to a master’s degree from one of India’s reputable universities by contacting the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, in their best interest.
- Students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category are eligible to apply for the National Fellowship, provided they have achieved the required merit in either the UGC NET JRF or CSIR NET JRF examination.
- Applicants are instructed to take the exam in the subject they studied during their post-graduation. In the case of candidates applying for the UGC NET exam, if their post-graduation subject is not included in the list of subjects, they may appear in a related subject.
Reservation Policy for UGC NET Eligibility
To meet the UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2024, candidates are required to review the reservation criteria for the exam. The Government of India has laid out the Reservation Policy that the commission implements. Each College/University reserves a percentage of seats for each category, as defined in the table below.

NATIONALITY ELIGIBILITY FOR UGC NET 2024
The UGC NET exam has specific eligibility criteria related to nationality, which candidates must consider before applying. To be eligible for the UGC NET exam, candidates must be Indian citizens. Those holding citizenship in any other country are not eligible to apply. However, Indian nationals residing overseas may still apply for the exam provided they can provide appropriate documentation confirming their nationality.
EXCEPTIONS TO ELIGIBILITY FOR UGC NET
- The UGC NET Eligibility Criteria for the recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors in Colleges, Universities, and Institutes requires a minimum qualification of NET/SET/SLET. The exemption from this requirement will be determined by the UGC regulations and amendments notified under the Gazette of India.
- Candidates who have cleared the UGC/CSIR JRF examination before 1989 are exempted from appearing in the UGC NET 2024.
- Ph.D. holders are not required to fulfill the minimum requirements for UGC NET.
- If a candidate has already passed a State Eligibility Test (SET), such as MHSET, APSET, KSET, etc., before June 1, 2002, they do not need to take the UGC NET 2024 test. These candidates can apply for the position of Assistant Professor in colleges and universities throughout India based on their SET results.
- Candidates who have passed the State Eligibility Exam after June 1, 2002, can only apply to colleges and universities in the state from where they have appeared for the exam

- Each correct answer on both UGC NET Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be awarded two marks.

UGC NET Score Calculation UGC NET Score Calculation
Approximately 6% of candidates will pass the Assistant Professor exam. The allocation of slots will follow the reservation policy of the Indian government for different categories.
To be eligible for both the JRF and Assistant Professorship positions, candidates must have taken both papers and received a minimum aggregate score of 40% (35% for reserved categories) in the exam.
NORMALIZATION FOR UGC NET 2024
The examination scores are normalized using the percentile method to provide an unbiased result that accounts for differences in exam difficulty. Scores for each session are allocated between 0 and 100, with raw scores converted to percentiles through the following formula: Total Percentile = (Number of candidates in the session with a raw score equal to or less than the candidate / Total number of candidates in the session) x 100. The raw scores are then combined with the percentiles from both sessions to calculate the final result.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR UGC NET 2024
To qualify in the UGC NET exam, candidates need to achieve a qualifying percentile. Once the results are out, a separate merit list will be created for each category and subject, featuring only those candidates who meet this requirement.
From this list, the top 6% of candidates will be declared eligible for Assistant professorship. These candidates will be considered NET qualified.
Moreover, a separate merit list will be prepared for candidates who have qualified for NET and are also eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
Finally, there is a minimum marks requirement that candidates must meet in order to qualify in the UGC NET exam.

SALARY STRUCTURE FOR UGC NET 2024
The UGC NET JRF salary structure after clearing the NET exam ::

The JRF fellowship initially lasts for three years and can be extended for an additional three years if the candidate’s research work is deemed satisfactory by the relevant department of the university or college.
The NET JRF scholarship amount is INR 31,000 for the first two years and INR 35,000 for the remaining tenure.
For contingency expenses,
- Humanities and Social Science candidates receive INR 10,000 per annum for the first two years and for the remaining three years they receive INR 20,500 per annum,
- Science candidates receive INR 12,000 per annum for the first two years and INR 25,000 per annum for the remaining three years.
- Physically and visually challenged candidates are eligible for a monthly allowance of INR 2,000 for escorts or reader assistance.

For the purpose of determining eligibility for positions as Assistant Professors and Junior Research Fellowships (JRFs) in Indian universities and colleges, on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the National Testing Agency (NTA) administers the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET).
When will UGC NET 2024 be conducted?
The official dates for UGC NET 2024 have not been announced yet. However, based on the previous year’s schedule, it is expected to be conducted in June 2024.
Is there an eligibility criteria for UGC NET 2024?
The eligibility criteria for UGC NET 2024 is as follows:
Educational Qualification: Candidates must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized university with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/PwD/ST/OBC/ transgender candidates).
Age Limit: For JRF, the maximum age limit is 31 years as on 1st June 2024. For Assistant Professors, there is no upper age limit.
How will the UGC NET 2024 exam be structured?
UGC NET 2024 will consist of two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 will have 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) of 2 marks each, and Paper 2 will have 100 MCQs of 2 marks each.
