The Indian Supreme Court has recently appointed two new judges, Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice R Mahadevan, bringing the court back to its full strength of 34 judges, here are some things to know about it.

Justice Singh hails from Manipur and is the first judge and completed his law studies at Kirori Mal College and the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.

He began his legal career in 1986 and served as the Advocate General of Manipur.

Justice Singh was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011 and became a permanent judge in 2012.

He served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from February 2023 until his elevation.

His appointment enhances the representation of the North-East in the Supreme Court, bringing regional diversity to the bench.

The second judge appointed for supreme court is Justice Mahadevan. He is an alumnus of Madras Law College and began his legal practice in 1989.

He has extensive experience in civil, criminal, and writ matters, specialising in indirect taxes, customs, and central excise.

He served as an Additional Government Pleader for Tamil Nadu and as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel.

Justice Mahadevan was elevated to the Madras High Court in 2013 and was serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

His appointment is noted for bringing representation from the backward community in Tamil Nadu to the Supreme Court.
