Ancient Origins

Kangra Fort is believed to have been founded by the Katoch Dynasty, one  of the oldest surviving royal dynasties  in the world.

Katoch Dynasty's Rule

The fort was the seat of the Katoch rulers for centuries, symbolising  their power in the Kangra region.

Mahmud of Ghazni's Invasion

After capturing the fort, Mahmud looted the wealth, but despite his take, the Katoch kings eventually regained control.

Siege by Emperor Akbar

The Mughal emperor Akbar attempted to seize Kangra Fort  in the 16th century.

Sikh Rule

Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ruler of the Sikh Empire, captured the Kangra Fort, marking another shift in power.

British Takeover

The British East India Company took control of Kangra Fort in 1846, It remained under British control  until India's independence in 1947.

Earthquake and Restoration

Restoration efforts have since been carried out to preserve its legacy, & it is now a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
