Koo was founded in March 2020 by Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidawatka. Its aim was to provide a microblogging platform for Indian user.

The app gained significant popularity in 2021, especially after the Indian government and various officials began promoting it amid a standoff with Twitter.
