Early Roots

The town of Amer, where the fort  is situated, was initially known as Dhundhar, the Kachhwaha Rajputs ruled it from the 11th century onwards.

Foundation by Raja Man Singh

In 1592, Raja Man Singh I, a Kachwaha Rajput ruler,  laid the foundation of the Amber Fort.

Expansion by Jai Singh I

Raja Man Singh's successor, Jai Singh I,  significantly expanded and renovated the fort during his reign from 1621 to 1667.

A Legacy of Rulers

Successive rulers of the Kachhwaha dynasty  made improvements and additions to the Amber fort over the next 150 years.

Shifting Capitals

In 1727, Sawai Jai Singh II  shifted the capital of the Kachwahas from Amer to the newly built city of Jaipur.
