Teflon Flu, also known as polymer fume fever, is an illness that results from inhaling fumes released by overheated Teflon-coated cookware, here are some things to know.

Symptoms

Teflon Flu symptoms often resemble those of the common flu and can include fever, chills, headache, and body aches.

Respiratory Issues

One of the hallmark symptoms of Teflon Flu is respiratory distress, which may manifest as wheezing, shortness of breath, and a feeling of suffocation.

Exposure Sources

The primary source of exposure  is the heating of Teflon-coated cookware to temperatures exceeding 500°F (260°C).

Prevention through Proper Use

To prevent Teflon Flu, always use Teflon-coated cookware according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Avoiding Overheating

Never leave Teflon-coated cookware unattended on a hot burner. Overheating can quickly lead to the release of fumes.

Alternative Cookware

Consider using alternative cookware materials such as stainless steel,  cast iron, or ceramic, especially if you frequently cook at high temperatures.

If you suspect exposure to Teflon fumes and experience symptoms of Teflon Flu, immediately move to fresh air.
