Zika virus, spread by mosquitoes, usually causes mild illness but can trigger severe birth defects if a pregnant woman is infected. Here are  its symptoms and precautions to know.

Symptoms

Most people infected with Zika  virus won't develop any symptoms or experience mild illness , they typically begin 3-14 days after exposure and last for 2-7 days.

Transmission

The primary mode of transmission for Zika virus is through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes.

Complications

Zika virus can cause severe complication for pregnant women leading to birth defects. And in normal person it can cause brain swelling too.

Prevention

There is no vaccine or specific treatment for Zika virus infection. The best way to prevent Zika is to avoid mosquito bites.

Precautions for Pregnant Women

If you are pregnant and think you may have been exposed to Zika, see your doctor right away for testing.

If you are travelling to an area with Zika, be sure to take steps to prevent mosquito bites.
